Competing in her own cross country race, Arcadia Unified School District Digital Communications Intern Grace Lee manages to cover other races at the same meet through responsible planning and quick thinking. Although it's impossible to snap photos while she's running, she works around a tight schedule to maximize coverage. Intrigued by how she pulls of such a feat, I asked her about her typical experience and how she prepares.

Currently, my two biggest priorities, other than my education, are cross country and DCI. Both are generally time-consuming, so it's inevitable that the two will overlap once in a while. Although this has its upsides and downsides, luckily, the pros outweigh the cons.

Cross country is an amazing and interesting sport, and I’m very glad I have the opportunity to spread the word about it. However, it requires lots of work, as is anything worth doing. On a normal race day, I pack two sets of clothes, an extra pair of shoes, a towel to sit on, food and drink, and sometimes, my homework if I happen to have a lot that day. When I have to cover the race as well, I need to add my camera and a couple extra batteries to my packing list.

When the team arrives at the race site, I usually have about thirty minutes to an hour to settle down and prepare for the actual race. By that time, my camera is out, and I’ll already have what kind of pictures I want to take in mind. I'm also actively searching for spots that will allow me to take interesting photos. As soon as I see something worthy of a photo, I'll quickly snap a few shots, knowing that the lighting and other factors may change after I run my own race. After taking an adequate amount of photos, I'll store my camera away. After the race, I try to take some more photos of runners from other races if the lighting and time allows.

Overall, covering a race that I’m competing in isn't too challenging or much of hassle. Giving up some time with my teammates and carrying a camera around is hardly a sacrifice for being able to represent Arcadia’s Cross Country Team as well as its Digital Communications Internship.
In the midst of college application deadlines, seniors find themselves busy balancing schoolwork, applications, and extracurriculars. If you find yourself in a similar situation, don't give up hope, for there will be a happy ending. In this blog post, senior Sarah Wang (Class of 2019) reminisces on her thrilling experience covering Arcadia High's graduation.

Graduation is perhaps one of the happiest and most bittersweet moments in life. You’re leaving all your friends, teachers, and classmates behind, but it is for a future that holds incredible things. However, for me, these past two graduations have been an opportunity for me to say my final thank yous to all the amazing seniors that have made an impact on my life. I’m so glad I got the opportunity to cover the event for DCI and capture this joyous moment for the hundreds of students that worked hard to reach the finish line.

Covering an event, especially one as large-scale as graduation, always comes with a sort of thrill. You’re there early with your press pass on and have the ability to strut past long lines to the restricted areas. During the event, you weave through the crowds and can be right where the action is. Last year, I was stationed behind at the Lifetouch stands to capture shots of the graduates as they received their diplomas which gave me a sense of the speed and precision professional professionals need to get their job done efficiently. It was incredibly heartwarming to see all the handmade signs, flowers, and posters that the graduates’ family and friends brought to support them, and I’m glad I was able to be a part of the experience. On the DCI side, it was also super fun to hang out with the other interns and bond over our sore feet and figuring out camera issues. Overall, though covering the small events is important, graduation is definitely one of the most fun events to cover and attend.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6187149152821980237.post-67505824595751183792018-10-26T15:24:00.001-07:002018-10-26T15:24:47.650-07:00Interns' Take on the Staff Appreciation Football Game

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Every year, Arcadia Unified's Digital Communications Interns (DCI) prepares an amazing assortment of special access, prizes, and activities for the Staff Appreciation Night, which takes place at an Arcadia High football game and was established to thank all the fantastic employees who work for the Arcadia Unified School District. Features range from VIP passes to standing in the field area and from Chromebook laptop and gift card giveaways to free candy for the kids. This year's registration area featured free tiny golden footballs and DCI stickers, a face painting table, a photography booth complete with posters for each school site, and a video interview station. Various DCI members drew school names in calligraphy with chalk onto the walkway, adding to the festive decor of the night.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Of course, none of this could be achieved without the help of the DCI interns. To accomplish such a wide variety of tasks, numerous groups were created, with each intern assigned to a specific role such as photography, registration, and videography. Here's what the DCI interns had to share about the experience.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Instagram Team assists the Arcadia Unified School District's public relations/communications efforts by updating the @arcadiaunified Instagram account. Our district's Instagram account was given a nod from Buzzfeed as one of the Top Ten Instagram accounts in the world, and we aim to keep it that way! We divide our responsibility for posting to our account into shifts, so one intern takes care of all the posts and captions per assigned day.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The key responsibility of members on the Instagram team is being punctual about posting. All Facebook posts must be transferred to the Instagram account by the same day the post is made on Facebook or by no later than the next day if the Facebook post is made late in the evening. Just remember, the sooner, the better. Members of the team should also proofread the caption, add appropriate hashtags, and tag applicable/appropriate Instagram accounts from other teams and/or organizations associated with Arcadia Unified. Additionally, Instagram team members should be looking through Instagram to find items to re-post to our district account, such as a post from Arcadia High's Girls Volleyball Instagram that would be great to share with our followers. Likewise, the Instagram team member should alert the Facebook team of items found on accounts associated with Arcadia Unified that would be great to post on our district Facebook page.
A podcast can be about anything that interests you. In fact, topics you may consider peculiar actually might make the best podcast episodes because they are often intriguing and thought-provoking.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Step One: Have Fun

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The first step is to listen to some popular podcasts. Take note of what it is that podcast hosts do that make their podcast engaging, and learn how they approach topics and interview others. Afterward, plan your podcasts and set a goal (and topic) for your episode release dates.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

Take some time and plan out the operations as soon as possible. You don’t have to focus on something relevant; do something that interests you but make sure you have a clear goal when making it.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

For example, it’s impossible to add a different soundtrack in addition to the three basic ones they provide, and you cannot join different audio clips together, which is a problem if you are working in a team and need to have different segments recorded on different devices. Also, Podbean only accepts MP3 audio files, so be sure that you have that file type when uploading your episode. You can use other editing software to make the final product that you upload into the platform you'll use to store and share your podcasts.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Step 2: Pull Through!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Make sure to stick to the schedule you’ve made and to release episodes on a semi-regular basis. However, always look for ways to improve your podcast. For example, during Podcast Team’s first semester, the team commonly had to resort to sending questions to the interviewee beforehand, recording each side of the dialogue separately, and then have the podcast editor edit the clips together using Audacity, an audio editing program. This saved time during our busy school week and allowed the interviewer and the interviewee to record themselves however many times they liked, but there was no live response or interaction between the two, taking away from the podcast listener’s experience. So this year, we are committed to making all our interviews live. Also, Skype now offers audio and video recording, so even if we cannot conduct an interview in person, we can always do it live through Skype.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Step 3: The End of the Cycle, to Some Degree

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Don’t be discouraged if you don’t get any likes on your episodes because many people forget to click the like button on episodes. However, make sure to advertise on social media. It’s a surefire way to gain more listeners and spread the message you are trying to put out. Try to look for constructive criticism: should you talk a little faster, should you use the voice recording app on your phone, or should you find a quieter area without outside noises and some fuzzy sounds?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">You don’t need a 20-minute podcast filled with different segments. It’s perfectly fine if you can get a solid 5-10 minute discussion going.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I find podcasting a very rewarding experience. You can expand your connections with the people you interview, improve your communication and teamwork skills (the latter if you have a team to help you produce podcasts), and you learn a lot overall. For your listeners, it’s convenient and easy to listen to. Now, what are you waiting for? Go podcast!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Ever since the idea of turning student-led presentation posts into blog posts was conceived last year, there's been quite a lot of confusion about the process. This post shall serve as a guide to teach interns how to properly convert a Google Slides presentations to a Blogger post.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Use the same title.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Give yourself credit in the intro paragraph.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Write a paragraph per slide or however many as deemed appropriate.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Write down what is said verbally; don't simply copy and paste from the presentation.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Link the presentation.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Upload visuals to make the blog post more interesting.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The reason why interns can't simply link their presentation is that, following presentation etiquette, there should be few words per slide since the presenter should be elaborating on the bullet points rather than reading off of the slide. This also gives interns the chance to add anything helpful that may have been omitted while presenting.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">If you need any additional help converting your skills presentation into a blog post, feel free to ask for assistance from anyone on the DCI Website team.

We are very proud of DCI's own Darius Jing, who is headed to Yale in the fall, as he recently earned a $20,000 college scholarship courtesy of Foot Locker. Darius spent two years as an intern, along with many other leadership roles on campus, and volunteer work in the community. Watch this inspirational video below about his surprise scholarship announcement and his wise advice for students. Way to go Darius! DCI takes to the digital airwaves! This past semester DCI launched a new student podcast which is hosted, produced, and edited by DCI students. As of this post, there are ten episodes and nearly 500 downloads already. Podcast team member Kelly Li wrote an article about the new venture which was published in the Arcadia Patch. You can read the full story here, and you can listen to all of the podcast via our podcast page.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">For the Digital Communications Internship, Spring Preview is not only an event to cover and promote Arcadia High, but it is also an opportunity to publicize DCI itself! Running the DCI booth on Thursday, April 12, seven interns advertised the organization to prospective middle school students and parents while running fun activities.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">"We had several amazing features at our booth this year, including a special egg hunt. Lucky students that found eggs came over to our booth to claim their prize: a gel pen or pieces of candy. That was definitely my favorite part since it attracted more people to our booth. Customized foam footballs with the Arcadia Unified logo were also included as prizes at our booth for the egg hunt. A camera, microphone and trifold board were also displayed.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">"Personally, I think we did an amazing job setting up our booth. It looked professional, and all the interns arrived on time. We were ready for the students to come check out our booth. In terms of preparation, I think we should prepare for Spring Preview a little earlier so that we can implement more of our ideas. Although the flyers and trifold board turned out amazing, more time would have been helpful so that not everything would be so rushed. Also, more space would have been better since we never got to implement our Chromebook smashing station or Instagram booth.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">"Helping to run the DCI booth this year made me feel very proud to be an Arcadia Unified School District (AUSD) intern. Plenty of students came to the booth, interested in the information we had to provide about DCI. It was great knowing that people were genuinely impressed by our program. I loved sharing my experiences. Overall, Spring Preview was a success, and I definitely want to work a shift next year!"

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">"The booth featured a multitude of things; we had pens, gel pens, a drone, candy, pamphlets, little footballs, the giant teddy-bear named Fur-an, and the amazing stuffed bear named Am-bear. My personal favorite was the pamphlets. Although that may sound super boring, I feel like the pamphlets looked amazing. It had a nice, aesthetic cover, a information filled inside, and a wonderful back cover that showed everyone how to apply. It was basically the basics of DCI in a sheet of paper."

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">—Cassidy Chhay
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">"I'd definitely advise future interns to start planning for Spring Preview at least a week in advance. This year, we began the process just the Monday before the event, and though we were able to get everything together, there were still a few kinks that we didn't flatten out. For starters, Spring Preview happened to be held on the windiest evening of the week, which we hadn't anticipated. The trifold board that we had wasn't stable enough to stand on its own, so we resorted to having it lie flat on our table, which decreased its appeal to passerbys. Additionally, we hid a few Easter eggs in the general vicinity of our booth, assuming people would find them and come to our booth to claim a prize. We got most of them back, however, some ended up far from their original places and were never found or returned. To the interns who will be running the booth in coming years, remember to check the weather and not take the extravagance too far."

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">"Running the booth definitely took a lot of preparation, energy, and perseverance. To prepare for the day, I had to organize event coverage, table decorations, branded DCI candies, prizes, music, and handouts to ensure that our presence would have the maximum effect on incoming students. During Spring Preview itself, I chatted with parents and students about DCI, handed out prizes, and went around with Fur-Ann and Ambear to send more attendees to the DCI table!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">"For future interns, my biggest advice is to greet everyone with a smile! Think back to how it felt to be a freshman stepping foot on campus for the first time and how intimidating that might be. A friendly face never fails to draw people in, and it's always best to sound passionate and excited about what you're talking about so that others will be too! Don't hesitate to reach out to people and never get discouraged if someone doesn't show interest; there are plenty more who will! Lastly, remember to have fun! Sure, you're trying to bring in more interns to join the DCI family, but Spring Preview is also a wonderful part of the DCI experience. Relax and enjoy the afternoon with your fellow DCI-ers and have a great time!"

My responsibilities included informing the incoming freshman with what DCI was about and interviewing students both past and future for the DCI podcast.Our booth featured our friendly faces ready to assist and inform any passerby’s questions as well as Furran and Ambear available for photo taking opportunities. My favorite experience was walking around and meeting all of our potential candidates."

The stream was not too successful, as we only accumulated about 50 viewers. Nevertheless, I also added photos to the @arcadiaunified Instagram story, through which we were able to reach over 1000 people! The amount of reach we had made me realize that perhaps DCI could utilize the Instagram story feature a bit more, as stories are also quite fun to create!"

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">New to the Digital Communications Internship or just want to brush up your caption-writing skills? Then this is the guide for you! <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Nearly all Digital Communications Interns will be required to write captions. This blog post will teach the basics to get new interns started.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">hook (optional but recommended)

Captions must include

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">names of both teams

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">whether it was a win or loss

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">where and when the game took place

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">congratulatory words (if it is a win)

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">when and where the next game is

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">any additional info (for example, if it is a special game such as a Senior Night)

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Also, watch out for special sports vernacular! They vary from sport to sport and can be quite tricky, so be sure to do a little research before writing a caption, especially if it is your first time covering an event of that sport. Below is an example of tennis vernacular.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A tennis match is composed of points, games, and sets. A set consists of a number of games (a minimum of six), which in turn each consist of points.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Music/Shows/Other
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Nearly all other events fall into another category, sharing similar qualities such as

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">event name

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">performers

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">directors/staff

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">ticket price, different types of tickets, where to buy (if it is ongoing)

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">time, date(s), location

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> Be sure to thank large groups and important people (e.g. a show director, choreographer) for their contributions to the event.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Crediting

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">When DCI interns cover events, the credits always begin with "Photos by Digital Communications Interns". If staff members helped out, simply include them as "staff". Unfortunately, we do not name parents and others who contributed due to previous instances where people helped just to get their name mentioned.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">An example credits statement:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Research

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">If you want your caption to be extra interesting and deviate from the standard hard facts, research is the way to go! You may also need to research to find out info or fact-check. Some great resources are

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Twitter

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Apache BigTeams

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Facebook

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">boosters social media pages

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Miscellaneous
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Make sure to be courteous! For example, don’t use words like “demolished” and “pulverized”. Instead, just say we “defeated” or “beat” another team. While we are glad our team won, we must remain polite and professional.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Fully spell out acronyms because not everyone knows what something stands for. For example, the Performing Arts Center (PAC) was built a few years ago, so old alumni may not recognize the name "PAC".
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Of course, watch out for common mistakes:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">AHS’ Boy’s Varsity Basketball should be Arcadia’s Boys Varsity Basketball

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">don’t start with the date

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">basic grammar (such as it’s vs its)

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Extras
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Want to spice up your caption? You can start with a hook sentence to pull in interested readers. Hook sentences can include shocking changes during a sports game, unexpected outcomes, and a catchy idiom.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">To make sentences sound better and more interesting, you can start with a verb. Also, more info that helps the caption deviate from the standard solid info will make your caption stand out!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Examples
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">If you want to see some examples of what a great caption looks like, simply head over to Arcadia Unified's Facebook page or Instagram account.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Practice
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Now that you've read this all, why not try putting your skills to the test? I created two imaginary but normal events that the typical DCI intern would cover. Give them a try!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">(They're rather short so feel free to make up some more info that, while writing a caption for a real game, you'd find through research.)
As the day progressed, we were split up into different workshops to learn more about journalism and civic engagement. The Mobile Journalism Workshop introduced many tools for mobile video recording and was also a nice refresher of many tips taught by DCI, such as the iMovie workshops that we have every year. Not knowing what to expect, I went into this event open-minded and excited to not only learn more about journalism but to also learn more about USC’s journalism accommodations and prestigious programs. Nevertheless, while I did learn a great deal about Public Relations and Marketing and such, I also learned some things about journalism in relation to myself and my experiences.
I. Journalism is not for me.
Before attending this event, I always considered the profession of a journalist as a prospective occupation for the future. However, upon spending a few hours learning about journalism, I realized that this is not what I expected journalism to encompass. Nevertheless, I greatly appreciate that I was able to get a taste of collegiate journalism so that I know what I would be getting myself into.
II. DCI is advanced.
It wasn’t until this event that I realized how fortunate us interns are to be able to not only participate in this program, but to also have access to tons of resources such as the utility of DSLR cameras, podcast apps, and weekly workshops. Many of the skills that were covered in the Journalism Day have been covered by DCI on multiple occasions and upon experiencing this, I realized that DCI is truly a prestigious and professional group to be a part of.
III. Journalism is everywhere.
While the entirety of the day may have not appealed to me, <span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre-wrap;">one profound thing I learned that really resonated with me is that journalism is everywhere. From the billboards we see on the freeways to the thousands of posts we see on social media, journalism<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre-wrap;">—<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre-wrap;">the sole spread of information<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre-wrap;">—<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre-wrap;">takes part through countless forms in our lives. In this day and age, information is disseminated in a matter of seconds<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre-wrap;">—<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre-wrap;">and it is through journalism that this is able to happen.
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial";">
Although I discovered that journalism is not ideal for me, I was able to reflect and truly appreciate the role that journalism has in my life<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre-wrap;"> from this USC Journalism Day."

The giant ornate buildings towered over a neat brick square, accurately described by my peer as 'Hogwarts in real life'. After listening to inspirational keynote speakers, all high school students attended mini-workshops that briefly covered journalism topics including social media, video production, and choice of media. Throughout the classes, I learned a little and reviewed a little; DCI had already covered many of the topics presented there. However, something I had never seen before was USC's breathtaking Annenberg Media Center, a giant room filled with cutting-edge technology: a TV channel program control room, news anchor filming studio, and a green screen corner with a teleprompter. This part was eye-opening and very new to me. While I will be majoring in computer science and not journalism, I'm grateful for the opportunity to attend USC's High School Journalism Day and gain exposure to higher-level knowledge and technology."

Congratulations to DCI veterans Naomi Silver and Michael Tseng who were not only accepted into USC's Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism Youth Academy for Media and Civic Engagement, but who thrived during the three-week summer program. The program taught the students a greater understanding of media and journalism literacy and practices, and essential competencies required for excellence in and out of the classroom. The program offers the equivalent of first-year college level courses, and the students worked directly with USC professors and administrators. Congratulations to Naomi and Michael!

A select group of DCI students will be attending USC's High School Journalism Day for the second straight year. This full-day of workshops at USC is where Michael and Naomi were first introduced and were encouraged to apply to the summer program.
A group of talented Arcadia High School students is honored with a prestigious communications award that is typically reserved for seasoned public relations professionals. The Arcadia Unified School District and its Digital Communications Internship (DCI) program were recently honored by the California School Public Relations Association (CalSPRA) at its annual awards dinner held in Sacramento. Arcadia Unified’s DCI students received an “Award of Excellence” in CalSPRA’s Excellence in Communications program.

“I am beyond proud of the job our students did on this project, and am grateful that CalSPRA recognized them for their very creative and important work,” said Arcadia Unified School District Public Information Officer Ryan Foran who created and oversees DCI. “This was a major project that we spent a lot of time on, and more importantly, it will save our district money and afford more students access to Chromebooks and technology.”

The “Award of Excellence,” the highest distinction available, was earned in the Multimedia/Visual Communication category for the creation of “DCI Chromebook Care Video.” After completing a three-year, 1:1 technology rollout, where every student and teacher in the district received their own Chromebook to work with, the number of repairs being made were higher than anticipated for the roughly 10,000 Chromebooks distributed throughout the District.

“We needed to get the word to our students about a few simple but important tips and techniques that would reduce the number of repairs we were making to the Chromebooks,” explained Arcadia Unified’s Chief Technology Officer Scott Bramley. “I’ve seen the impressive work produced by DCI, and knew they would do a great job with this project.”

DCI turned the challenge into an opportunity and created a very informative yet entertaining video about proper Chromebook care. The video, which has well over 2,000 views on YouTube, was sent to all AUSD parents, students, and teachers, and was also watched and discussed in classrooms throughout the District.
After the release of the video, damage reports significantly decreased.

Alongside Foran, AHS juniors Naomi Silver and Melanie Mak, two-year DCI veterans, led the project as co-executive producers, with Silver also serving as lead video editor. Twelve other DCI students worked on the video as segment producers, actors, and contributors. These students include: Adele Ng, Alan Zhang, Derek Jing, Nick Marshall, Jack Wu, Jarett Yip, Jeremy Du, Kelly Li, Sarah Wang, Seongwook Jang, Troy Nguyen, and Katie Wen.

The Arcadia Unified Digital Communications Internship program was created in the Spring of 2015 and is an integral part of Arcadia Unified’s Communications and Public Information Office. DCI has grown from its first intern, Arcadia High senior Travis Chen, to 41 Apaches now participating in the program. The interns help cover the many events that occur throughout the district through digital communications, helping tell the many positive stories of Arcadia Unified’s students, teachers, and staff.

"It's more important now than ever that schools share our stories, to help parents connect with their children's schools and to help taxpayers see how districts are spending their precious resources. CalSPRA’s Award of Excellence winners are at the top of their class, successfully building support for and creating an understanding of our public schools," said CalSPRA President Music Watson.

CalSPRA is a nationally recognized leader in school communications that promotes better public understanding, commitment, and support of public education through effective communications.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">DCI was smelling the roses at the 128th Rose Parade held in Pasadena on January 2, 2017! DCI was rubbing elbows and covering the parade with media from all over the world. The prestigious parade had a very strong Arcadia presence which featured the Arcadia High School Marching Band, Royal Court Princesses Emi and Maya, AHS Boy and Girl Scouts, and AUSD student and staff volunteers and ambassadors. DCI's pictures and videos were seen by thousands of people on the Arcadia Unified School District Facebook page! The Facebook video below has already been shared nearly 200 times and has been viewed more than 25,000 times as of this posting just a couple days after the parade.
It was very eloquently written and truly spoke to the mission of DCI, and what we are trying to accomplish. Sarah graciously agreed to have her words shared publicly which we greatly appreciate because we couldn't have said it any better than this:

I’ve learned so much, met so many people, and created many wonderful, valuable experiences. Prior to joining DCI, I’d never touched a DSLR camera and only applied hoping to grab the secretary position. I’m so proud of myself and my fellow DCI interns for having come so far in just one semester!

I’ve discovered new passions through DCI and now I take my DSLR with me everywhere I go. If I can make such a great impact on my life and the lives of others in just a few months, I can only imagine the amazing opportunities that lay ahead. I hope to sharpen my skills so I can give back to our community and continue to make an impact on others through my work in DCI and social media.

If I could start the year over again, I know applying to DCI would be my first priority because DCI has been one of the best investments of my time. Not only have I learned to work in the fields of digital communications, photojournalism, event planning, and marketing, I’ve also learned the value of time-management, communication, responsibility, teamwork, and working hard. DCI has absolutely fulfilled and gone above and beyond the hopes and goals I made for myself at the beginning of the semester, and I very much hope that I’ll get to experience that feeling again."

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The DCI Video team exists to create content in video format. With a strong team of filmmakers, writers, and actors, the team's goal <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">each semester<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> is to produce larger scale projects alongside video summaries from event coverage. Centered on collaboration, the content-creation experience is one that is open to new ideas and allows everyone to have a voice.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">To be on this team, interns need to have an open mind and be able to collaborate with others. These skills are of the utmost importance when the team covers events and works together to get the whole story.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Along with individuals being self-starters in providing video coverage of events, interns need to be collaborative to quickly and easily share ideas for higher profile projects. All in all, the video team aims to create great things, so make sure to keep an eye out for them!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6187149152821980237.post-32039177788633289972016-10-27T15:57:00.000-07:002016-11-03T22:18:42.973-07:00DCI Attends AUSD Board of Education Meeting

Every semester DCI visits a Board of Education meeting to learn about the important role of the AUSD Board of Education and its members. DCI had a pizza dinner before the meeting, and was taught about the purpose and function of the Board of Education. Then DCI attended the meeting and observed the governing board in action.

In order to understand and promote the District, it's vital that DCI members understand that the Board of Education oversees and approves all programs and aspects within the District. It's also important that the students meet and see each of the board members, so they can be properly recognized when DCI is reporting on different District events.

DCI hosts another successful AUSD Staff Appreciation Night with approximately 350 VIP AUSD staff members and their guests. 21 DCI team members helped with every aspect of the evening from creating digital flyers for promotion, posters, registration and check-in, raffle, photos, videos, setup and clean up.

In addition to learning about digital communications, DCI members learn first-hand about event hosting and all the complexities that go into a large event. DCI was also very busy taking photos of the many smiling faces and posted nearly 400 photos to our album on Facebook. Thanks for a great night DCI, and thanks to the amazing AUSD staff for all they do!
